For Employers

Introduction for Employers

Our aim is to ensure a confident, diverse and inclusive network of employers throughout Perth & Kinross, including those in more rural locations.

This will increase the percentage of autistic individuals in full time employment, raise awareness of the strengths of autistic employees, and increase future work opportunities for our young people as they move in to adulthood.

Autistic individuals can make effective and highly valued employees. As is the case with all employees, it’s important to match the person’s particular skills to the requirements of the post.

Autistic individuals are often very focused and have considerable skills in a range of areas.

However, they are often disadvantaged when it comes to getting and keeping a job because of difficulties with social communication and interaction, and other people’s lack of understanding.

With the right support and training for employers and colleagues, autistic people have much to offer employers.

Perth Autism Support can support employers with:

  • Understanding Autism training for your staff along with bespoke training to your suit the needs of your sector
  • Guidance and training for employers offering a Work Experience
  • Guidance and training in the recruitment process for an autistic individuals
  • Site visits with the young person to develop relationships for employers offering a Work Experience
  • Getting to know the particular young person who will be undertaking the work experience/role
  • Understanding of the strengths that autistic employees add to organisations
  • Environmental audits to support small changes that can lead to a more positive experience
  • Mentoring
  • Support in the workplace for young people accessing work experience

As employers, you can play your part in making the world a more autism accepting place.

Your organisation can benefit from having access to tomorrows local talent!

Can you offer a Work Experience Opportunity?

Do you want to be part of an amazing community that supports our young people with a Work Experience opportunity at your place of work?

As part of our Employability and Community Engagement Strategy we are keen to continue to build relationships with local employers to offer a diverse range of meaningful and engaging work placements for our young people.

Perth Autism Support provides autism specific support and advice for secondary schools in Perth & Kinross and Employers within Perth & Kinross, to support and enable autistic pupils to access a motivating and engaging work placement in their senior years and introduce them to the idea of looking at longer term employment planning or further education.

Through speaking with our colleagues in Education and Developing Young Workforce Perth, we know that there is sometimes a difficulty in finding appropriate work experience opportunities, and when placements are found these are traditionally within areas that are assumed to be autism friendly, but which may be of little interest to the young people and we know that placements are much more successful and meaningful if young people are invested, motivated and engaged in their chosen area.

There can also be challenges with employers feeling that they may not be equipped to support an autistic young person, with resources to support those young people who may not be able to access a fully independent placement and anxiety in the young people as they do not feel prepared for the placement as they do not know what to expect and what is expected of them.

Perth Autism Support can provide:

  • Autism training
  • Placements matched to young people who have a keen interest in the particular area of work
  • Site visits with the young person to develop relationships
  • Understanding of the particular young person who will be undertaking the placement
  • Understanding of the strengths that autistic employees add to organisations
  • Environmental audits to support small changes that can lead to a more positive experience for young people
  • Information and advice for staff working directly with the young person
  • Support for the young person in the placement until confident to access the placement independently
  • A flexible approach to times of placements to meet the needs of the business.
