Siblings Support

About Sibling Support

At PAS we recognise that having an autistic brother or sister can bring its own set of unique experiences.

The Siblings Project aims to recognise and support these, with an emphasis on gaining knowledge about autism as well as enjoying time with others in a similar situation.

The support offered is tailored to each individual, and we can offer:
 – Social Groups
 – 1:1 Sessions
 – School Support

The benefits of accessing support include:
 – Increased confidence

 – Reduced stress

 – Increased understanding of autism

 – Increased patience with siblings

 – Improved family relationships

Young Carers Action Day 2021 – Positive Futures

The Young Carers Service at PKAVS as created a Positive Futures section on their website linked to the theme of this year’s Young Carers Action Day which took place on 16th March 2021.

What do we offer?

Sibling Social Groups

The social groups are a fantastic opportunity to promote peer friendships with other siblings in a similar situation who understand the ups and downs of having an autistic brother or sister.

We offer a Primary Aged Siblings Group and a Secondary Age Siblings Group.

The groups offer a mix of planned activities, an opportunity to talk and most importantly building relationships and having fun!

The activities are tailored to the group we have and we like to get suggestions for activities from the group, ensuring they are getting the most out of the sessions!

1:1 Sessions

It is recognised that from time to time, situations may arise which young people may not wish to share in a group setting, or siblings who may benefit greatly from support might not be able to access the social groups.

Therefore, in addition to the social groups, there is availability for one to one support sessions with more intensive or focused support on individual issues.

This may also be useful to those who may need a bit of encouragement to access the social group, or for those
who require some extra support or respite in addition to what is offered in the social group.

Holiday Programmes

The siblings’ holiday programme provides respite opportunities during what can sometimes be a stressful
time of year, giving them a chance to experience fun activities in a supportive setting.

Siblings Consultation December 2020

We have offered a range of opportunities over the years for Siblings but we have recently carried out a consultation to make sure we are adapting our offer to what the young people are asking for and to help us improve and develop our Siblings offer.

We carried out face to face and online consultation and would like to say a massive thank you to all the siblings who got involved to tell us their views!

Through funding from Creative Breaks we are delighted to be able to use this information to deliver a new programme for siblings in 2021, really tailored to the needs and interests of the young people!

We recognise the responsibilities that siblings have as carers, and we want to create an environment focused on them and get it right!
So, here’s some consultation responses with some feedback you said and what will do to address this!

What do our families say?

“I have enjoyed getting to know others and how they feel about their siblings” – Young Person

“Thank you so much for the Sibling Social Group, they have enjoyed it so much” – Parent

“I liked going to Blend and I think I did well at meeting new people” – Young Person

“Thank you for having (young person) along, he has fair enjoyed it and looking forward to next year” –Parent
