At PAS we recognise that supporting a child or young person who is going through an assessment or has a diagnosis of autism can, at times, be stressful.
We know that research tells us that the strongest indicator of positive outcomes for autistic young people is having a supportive family who understand and accept their child, including their autism diagnosis and sometimes families may need support to achieve this.
The type of support offered will be different for each family, based on their individual needs, but will be outcome focused to enable and build skills.
Family Support is:
Registering with Perth Autism Support
Our Family Support team are also the first point of contact for any new families who would like to register for our services.
Complete the contact form or email us on families@perthautismsupport.org.uk and one of the team will get in touch to arrange a registration appointment at a time that works for you.
During this appointment, you will be able to talk through your family’s current circumstances, find out more about our services and the team will signpost you to the most relevant parts of service for your family’s needs.
Our services for parents/carers are provided to those who are awaiting assessment for their child as well as those who have a diagnosis of autism. We are aware that many of our parents/carers identify as autistic and whilst our services have a clear model of approach, we aim to be as flexible as possible in the delivery of these services to provide information and advice that meets the needs of each individual parent/carer.
Parents/carers services are offered in a Universal, Targeted and Specialist approach to allow us to concentrate intensive services on the families who need this most.
Universal services: these services are for all parents/carers of autistic young people and include access to our resource library and weighted therapy loan service, access to our entry level training – Practical Understanding of Autism, online group support, complementary therapies and social opportunities to develop a peer support network.
Targeted services: these services are for parents/carers who require more in depth information and support on a short term basis. These include our intermediate and advanced training sessions, support for the completion of Disability Living Allowance forms, signposting to other organisations to meet needs, support at school meetings, support to develop resources for use with their children and young people and specific small group practical discussion based sessions around any challenges they face in supporting their young people effectively.
Specialist services: these services are designed to be accessed when both universal and targeted services have been tried and there is still a need for ongoing support or intensive family support work. This area tends to include families who have more complex needs in addition to autism.
If you are seeking some information, advice or support from our Family Support team, please contact us in the first instance using the contact form below or by emailing families@perthautismsupport.org.uk
One of the team will get in touch to with you to talk through your situation and may signpost you to our training, or to more appropriate areas of service.
If it is recognised that you would benefit from more intensive support from the team, a Family Support Service application will need to be completed (our staff can assist with this if required).
As this is a high demand area of service, our team may suggest some short term strategies and ideas you can do at home whilst you wait for your case to be allocated.
While you are waiting for your case to be allocated to one of our team, we will keep in touch with you.
When allocated, your Family Support key worker will get in touch to arrange to develop an action plan with you which will detail the work that will be done.
Get in touch directly with family support at Perth Autism Support by filling out the contact form on the right.

We want to ensure that our children and young people have the same understanding and support when they need it, at home, in school and any community settings they may go to.
Through our training programmes, we use and share a number of tools to be able to do this for both parents/carers, education staff and other community groups and whilst we recommend attending the training to understand the why, we felt it would be useful to share some resources we use daily here at PAS, with a guide for use.
If you have any questions about using these resources then in the first instance we would recommend you attend our training programmes which can be found on our Events page, alternatively contact our Family Support Team on families@perthautismsupport.org.uk or call 01738 451081 and they will be happy to help!
