Training and Information Sessions

Our parents at Perth Autism Support have access to a number of training and learning workshops designed to increase their confidence when dealing with the challenges which may occur when bringing up a child with autism.

interACTION is a two day (5 hours per day through school times) course looking at behaviours parents may see with their children in terms of sensory, social and communication skills.  We then look at the underlying reasons for these and start to look at strategies of how to plan or support behaviours.

The interACTION course is delivered by our trained staff team and is a not only a great introductory course for parents at the start of the their autism journey but can be a fantastic refresher for parents who have prior knowledge of autism.

Please note your child does not have to have a diagnosis of autism to attend the training, the training material is relevant for parents of children who are awaiting assessment or who have a social communication difficulty.

Although interACTiON is a great all round course, sometimes parents would like more specific information on specifc topics, we therefore offer 11 topic specific workshops, twice per year, for parents to attend.  These are:

interACTION: Communication (delivered in partnership with Speech and Language Therapy, NHS Tayside)

Children's Information Workshops

I Am Me

I Am Me is a 6 week course that has been developed for secondary school aged children to look at what is autism, what autism means to them personally, support networks and some support in managing difficult times.

The course has recently been published in the Good Autism Practice Journal by the University of Birmingham and we deliver "Train the Trainers" courses on this to other organisations outwith Perth & Kinross who would like to deliver this to children they work with.

The course is run twice per year in February and September and groups are kept small at only 6-8 children to allow the best possible outcomes for the young people attending.

A link to the Good Autism Practice Journal, which gives more in depth information about the course can be found by clicking here

The format of the course is as follows:

Week One: Getting to know you

Week Two: Information session

Week Three: Exploring feelings

Week Four: Support networks

Week Five: Managing difficult times

Week Six: Celebrating Success – course certificates and course outing/social activity

For more information regarding our I Am Me course, contact our Chief Executive, Angie Ferguson on 01738 451081 or email

Time for Us!

Parents often worry about the effects on their other children of having a brother or sister with autism.  Our Siblings Awareness Course, Time for Us, is designed along the same model of I Am Me and explores both the positive and negative aspects of having a sibling with autism, how to cope and additional support and advice.  The course lasts for 6 weeks and runs once per year in Autumn.

The course is suitable for siblings aged 8 and over.

The format of the course is as follows:

Week One: Getting to Know You

Week Two: What is it like to have autism?

Week Three: Feelings about our brothers and sisters: Tricky times vs. Fun times

Week Four: Explaining to others

Week Five: Being treated differently

Week Six: Celebrating Success

For more information on our siblings course, contact Amy Officer, Siblings Co-ordinator on 01738 451081 or email
