It can sometimes be tricky to have a brother or sister with autism, simple things that most families take for granted can become an impossible task, such as having friends round for tea, sleepovers or just having a family day out through the school holidays can all difficult due to the sensory issues, need for routines and behaviours that our children with autism can have. Autism is a complex condition and can be difficult to understand.
Our Siblings Group at Perth Autism Support is a chance for brothers and sisters of the children registered with us to meet once a week to do a range of activities and have fun in a supportive environment with other brothers and sisters who can understand the challenges that can be faced with living with a sibling with autism. The group is fully supported by our staff and volunteers.
We also offer our siblings the chance to get a weekend away once per year for fun outdoor activities through our Short Breaks Project.
We are delighted that our Siblings Programme from October 2015 - October 2016 will be funded and supported by Creative Breaks, Better Breaks funding. From our autumn term in 2015 we will be offering the following to siblings:
- Weekly social group for siblings of primary school age
- Weekly social group for siblings of secondary school age
- 1 day trip per week through the Easter and Summer holidays of 2016
- Christmas party in December 2015
We will also be offering our Time for Us! workshops. These sessions, which are modelled on the I Am Me! programme, will provide the siblings with a chance to explore what it means for them to have a brother or sister on the autism spectrum. The group will have plenty of opportunities across 6 sessions to ask questions about autism and share their experiences whilst getting some support and advice on specific issues in a positive and understanding environment.
In order to provide the most effective experience we will be running two blocks of the Time For Us! course, one which will be appropriate for children aged 8-11 years and one targeted at young people aged 12 and above.
