Sometimes children who register with Perth Autism Support require more individualised one to one support or are unable to access our group activities for a variety of different reasons, this is where our Befriending service steps in.
We have spaces for up to 20 children to receive high level one to one support to work on a variety of social, emotional and communication skills, working with a highly trained befriender.
The service is intensive as our Befriending Co-ordinator works closely with each family to ensure an individualised approach to each child. The matching process of a befriender to a child is of utmost importance and our Co-ordinator will spend time getting to know the children and the befrienders to put together what we think will be the best match for the young person, our Co-ordinator then spends time doing a number of visits with the befriender, young person and parents/carers to ensure everyone is happy and comfortable with the pairing before any visits can start with just the befriender and the young person. Specific goals are set for the match and these are reviewed regularly with parents, this makes the visits much more intentional and we have seen significant results in terms of children overcoming personal fears or challenges, increase in confidence and development in independence and social skills.
It is important to us to get this part right as this will ensure the most successful outcomes for the young person, their family and for the befriender as well.
Children should be aged 8 or over to apply for a befriender.
